The Impact of Technology on Astrology in the 2020’s
Hello, and thank you for reading this post.
I am studying for the MA in Cultural Astronomy and Astrology at the University of Wales Trinity St David’s. As a novice astrologer and former IT consultant with over 30 years experience, this dissertation brings together these two sides of my life very neatly. It will attempt to determine what, if anything, has changed in the way astrologers use technology since Frances Clynes completed her PhD in 2015.
Her thesis addressed several related questions, two of which are pertinent to this research:
- ‘Has internet use changed their (astrologers’) practice of astrology?
- Can the internet use bring about any fundamental changes to astrology itself?’
It concluded that whilst, at the time, astrologers generally saw the internet as positive with regards to their astrological practice, they also believed it ‘would over time, have a negative impact on astrology’ (Clynes, Cyberspace and Dualism, p. 302.).
In the decade since Frances submitted her PhD, digital technology has advanced in unanticipated ways, offering more choice regarding access, economics and communication. This has changed how the average user of digital technologies engages online, and has impacted astrologers in ways unimaginable in 2015.
If this topic is also of interest to you, I would be very grateful if you completed the initial research questionnaire below, and/or pass it along to your astrological friends and colleagues.
The first part of my research project is gathering initial information through the questionnaire below, it should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
Only Question 7 must be answered as this simply confirms you are an astrologer. This means that if you don’t feel you have a response for other questions, you do not have to complete them.
The questionnaire below can completed anonymously as you only need to share an email address if you would like to take part in the Next Steps detailed at the end.
All responses are voluntary and completing the questionnaire is confirmation of your willingness to take part in this stage of the research project. If, at a later stage you would prefer to have your responses removed, this can be done up to the point of submission of the final dissertation.
All responses to the questionnaire will be held securely in my University OneDrive account and will be deleted as soon as the research project has been completed and marked. Any personally identifiable data, including email addresses, will be removed from the data file and held separately and used only for the purpose of communicating Next Steps.
I would also like to talk to a few astrologers in more depth in online interviews of up to one hour. Such interviews will be recorded and transcribed, the recordings and transcriptions will be deleted after the dissertation has been submitted. If you would like to take part in an interview you can indicate this at the end of the questionnaire and I will get in touch with more information. If, at a later stage, you wish to have your interview removed from the research, this can be done up to the point of submission of the dissertation.
If you have any questions about this research project please you can contact me through my university email account: 2409122@student.uwtsd.ac.uk
Please Note: The questionnaire should take no more than 10 minutes to complete.
Thanks for your help, it is very much appreciated.
Linda
