This week I’m really pleased to introduce Julieanne Lynch, aka JA Lynch, to the Thursday Throng. Julieanne describes herself as a fiery libran hailing from Northern Ireland and is now writing full-time.

within the shadowsThe Review

Within the Shadows is a book of conundrums and it’s not your usual vampire novel. On the one hand you are starting with a naïve schoolgirl who has failed to see something lurking in the shadow’s of her best friend’s personality; on the other hand she is a feisty woman who is not afraid of taking responsibility for her own life, even if that does mean she does some pretty strange things. The book is full of unexpected twists in the plot that leave you wondering where on earth you might be taken next; this is an advantage as it keeps you hooked while waiting to see the next development take place. I’d say it’s the perfect book for the female YA market and would make a great gift to give a niece or daughter at Christmas.

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

Well, I had the opportunity to travel to Dubai in 2004, and had the bizarre experience of sand boarding down sand dunes in the Abu Dhabi desert at night. I was the only one in my group who succeeded at doing it right, and instantly fell in love with the strange sport. And I am secretly afraid of Camels; they are seriously too freaky for words.

Are the names of your characters important to you?

Yes, very much so. Some people may not know, but many of my characters have names that mean something that is significant to their role in my novel. My protagonist Giselle undergoes quite the transformation in my novel Within the Shadows, so her name was very apt for her: “hostage” or “pledge”.

  • Alexander: defending men – he is determined to protect his people from the Shadows
  • Afanas: immortal
  • Leonid: lion strength
  • Atarah: crown – she desires to be Queen of the Underworld
  • Antoine: worthy of praise (quite suitable for this dashing Vampire)

Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?

Before I considered writing as a serious career, I did dream (more often than not) of being a singer. I wrote my own songs from a very young age, and did venture into the world of music for a few years, doing showcases, recording demo material and putting a band together.  I loved the experience, but am quite thankful I hung my hat up before attempting to do the gigging scene. Being a mother, it really wasn’t a suitable career choice.

How do you remain sane while working?

Being a mother of five, my hectic home life tends to keep my feet on the ground, and I get some relief from my work pressures. But I do find that when I am nearing completion on a project, my mind goes into overdrive, and it can be very difficult to come back down from all the adrenaline running through my veins, but again, I have a wonderful husband who is there to keep me sane; well, as sane as an author can be.

What is the book that you wished you had written?

The Color Purple by Alice Walker. That book is without a doubt one of my all time favourites, and is written in such a way, that it still conjures up the rawest emotions floating around inside of me. If I had written that book, I would have been proud that I could influence the mindset of my reader. It is an amazingly well written book, and one that will never be too old fashioned or out of date.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

I am addicted to Coffee when writing. I cannot get enough of it. It’s great, especially if I have had a very disturbing night before hand.

Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?

I am the world’s worst worrier. Honestly, I worry about everything from being in the car, to not turning of my cooker. I worry over the most silly, ridiculous things, and it can be very debilitating. I suppose I am a natural born worrier, but because of all the worrying I do, I tend to pick at the skin around my fingers, often leaving them bleeding, which in turn can make typing very difficult and painful.
