Piercing the FoldReview of Piercing the Fold. Imagine if you were a normal person, going about your daily life, who has moments out of time that can’t be explained. One day a different reality bursts in to prick the bubble of that ‘normality’ and thrust you into a world you had never even imagined could exist. Just imagine! That’s the basis of the story of Jesca that begins its process of reveal in Piercing the Fold. The characters Venessa draws are so lifelike, that the book almost makes you think that this reality is living right next door to you too – perhaps it is, we’ll probably never know. The settings and initial situations seem so ‘real’, that you could be forgiven for imagining they might happen to you the next time you step out the door. However, as the story unfolds, the world Venessa has created shifts from the comfortably familiar, to a darker one no-one would like to see. I enjoyed the book very much, it kept me gripped right to its conclusion and I’m looking forward to part II with anticipation.

Venessa KimballThe Interview.

Hi Venessa and welcome to the Thursday Throng. As you know, I start all my interviews with the same question; what is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I was a very shy child

Are the names of your characters important to you?

Yes, the names don’t happen until I feel  I know the characters’ importance, presence, and purpose in the storyline.

How did you choose a title for your book?

I chose the title for the first book in this series after I drafted the first book. I didn’t want to box my imagination into a few words while I was still drafting the book.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Not enough time in the day to write! Thoughts come to you at odd times and in odd situations. And, they just spiral. One spawns another. Post-it notes are awesome for this. By the bed side table, in the car, in the living room, everywhere!

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Have a plan and execute it! If you believe in it, you will achieve it!

How do you remain sane while working?

Music playing in the background…keeps my mind moving and my fingers typing!

Are you jealous of other writers?

No, I’m curious about other writers. Never jealous. I like to hear how their process unravels. Every writer has a different technique and habit that they utilize when writing.

Where do you find your inspiration?

Music is a huge inspiration. I have posted the playlist of songs I listened to while writing Piercing the Fold.  It is on my website at!if-there-was-a-playlist/c1yqu.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

Think outside of the box and be resourceful

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Coffee for morning writing.  Iced tea for evening writing.
