Life Lessons From a 40 Something pamela sommers

Meet Pamela Sommers, author of Life Lessons From a 40 Something

Pamela Sommers takes the front seat in this week’s Thursday Throng author interview. Her book, Life Lessons from a 40 Something, is a little like writing a letter to your (much) younger self. Full of hints and tips to help you become the best you can be.

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I used to play the violin.

How did you choose a title for your book?

I wanted to share my real-life experiences to help and inspire others and as I am over 40, ‘Life Lessons from a 40 something…’ seemed just right.

Have you ever written naked?

Ha ha! Not naked, but I often get inspiration in the early hours of the morning and write in my pyjamas.

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

My biggest challenge is when I start writing one book and then I suddenly start buzzing with ideas for the next book. I get so excited and have to contain myself and try to focus on the task at hand. I now write down my ideas as I get them and place them in a folder until I have completed my existing piece.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

You can do it, believe in yourself and just start writing. You never know where it could lead…

How do you remain sane while working?

Remembering the purpose of your book and maintaining a sense of humour throughout the whole process keeps me going.

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

I learnt to ride a horse at the age of 42. I went from feeling absolutely terrified and physically shaking with fear, to feeling exhilarated and not wanting to get off the horse. Overcoming my fear was so empowering, it made me feel like I could do anything!

Where do you find your inspiration?

From observing everyday life i.e. how people interact with each other, feeling happy and seeing the beauty all around us. Little things make the world a better place, such as hearing the birds sing and watching a beautiful sunset.

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

Never assume anything and to think outside the box.

What is the book that you wished you had written?

‘Wuthering Heights’ by Emily Brontë
