Meet Daren Martin, author of Beached Whale: Learning to Swim in the New Ocean

This week I’d like to introduce you to Daren Martin, a business consultant who works with companies on change management strategies.

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

I am outgoing and social but really value my quiet time reading and reflecting.

What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?

CIO Blake Hollman called A Company of Owners “The best book I have read since Good to Great.” The late great Leonard Cohen sent me a personal note and autographed copy of his poetry book because he loved Whiteboard so much.

Are there any occupational hazards to being an author?

People don’t always like what you have to say particularly if it hits close to home.

Who would you like to play you in a film of your life?

Jeff Bridges

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Reminding myself of the adage “Production before perfection.” Sometimes you just have to accept what you have put down and move on.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Write. Write often. You can edit later. Take good care of yourself and then let the words flow.

Are you jealous of other writers?

The success of other writers inspires me because I know great content (and sometimes not so great content) eventually gets noticed. I love Hemingway’s quote which says, “If you are intimidated by other writers, you should be.”

What was the most important thing you learned at school?

That the most important things are not learned in school unfortunately. Design your own career plan. Read vociferously. Experience life first hand. Surround yourself with people who are smarter than you. My friend says he has had two kinds of teachers. Those who taught him what to think and those who taught him how to think. The latter kind are few and far between, but are priceless.

What is the strangest thing you have ever had to do to promote a book?

The strangest thing I have had to do to promote a book is promote a book. I have this underlying belief that if you build it they will come. The reality is people may read your book and think it is amazing and never tell a living soul. You have to ask people for help in getting the word out which seems odd to me but is the reality.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

When I write on a plane a bloody mary and coffee (I let them fight it out!) At home, red wine.
