An Interview with Peggy Kopman-Owens, author of A Summer Abroad

This week it’s my great pleasure to welcome Peggy Kopman-Owens to the Thursday Throng hotseat. Peggy is the author of 9 other Parisian themed books, the latest of which is ‘A Summer Abroad: Mrs Duchesney’s First Real Mystery’.

The Peggy Kopman-Owens Interview

peg kopman owensWhat is one thing that no one would usually know about you?

That I am a very private person in real life.

Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?

Film editor. Puppet maker. Like authors, film editors and puppeteers like to pull the strings and shape the story’s outcome. Perhaps, this is the same joy sculptors find in discovering the figure inside of the stone, but I could never be that brilliant or that strong.

Where do you find your inspiration?

After traveling to 35 countries on 5 continents, first as a commercial and private jet crew member, and then, as a freelance writer, I’ve accumulated a wealth of inspiration. The challenge continues to be translating these adventures, overflowing with unique personalities, into fictional mysteries and believable characters.

Are the names of your characters important to you?

Yes. I give it a great deal of thought. My characters are fictional, each a tapestry of attributes, attitudes, and affectations woven from memories of people I’ve met over the years. None is based upon one particular real life person, yet even a fictional being deserves a name to celebrate his/her imagined immortality on the pages of my books. In a sort of literary ‘wink,’ however, two characters received the first names of actual friends, my way of thanking them for being in my life. Fortunately, both friends (very different from their character namesakes) found this most amusing.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer… which do you prefer when writing?

Coffee, when writing a book. Champagne, when celebrating the book’s release. Brunello di Montalcino with close friends, when the first book reviews come out. And depending upon the review… an aspirin.
