An Interview with Kylee Gwartney, author of Catching the Fever

It’s Thursday, it’s time for the Thursday Throng and my guest this week is Kylee Gwartney, the author of a new teen chick-lit book called Catching the Fever. The target audience for the novel is teenage girls 13 and up. The story follows four high school girls on a crazy journey to save their arts school, and along the way they encounter a pop star very similar to Justin Bieber.

This book is a very easy book to read, it’s quick and will appeal to those who have less that stellar concentrations. It was a typical chick-lit plot, girls meet boy etc … but it was written for teenagers. I like characters that are believable and the girls in this book certainly were. Their language was exactly how I imagined girls would speak to each other, the descriptions were from the perspective of a teenager and worked well. However I think I’d like to have seen a ‘star’ who wasn’t so obviously someone from real life. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the story developed along with the characters throughout the course of the book as not everything was revealed at the same time. All in all, I think this would be a great book to give a  reluctant teenage reader.

As regular readers know, I always start my interviews with the same question, ‘What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

Most people don’t know that I’ve sat on the same toilet as Oprah and Michael Jackson. My best friend Laura and I managed to meet the guy staying in the Bridge Suite at Atlantis in the Bahamas on my 18th birthday. We hung out with him and a couple of other people and he showed us around the place. Naturally, knowing all the amazing people who’d stayed in that room before, we had to go sit on the golden toilet.

Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?

I would love to be a singer in another life.  I’m always singing, but never in front of people. Singing instantly makes me feel better, especially if I’m belting out One Direction. My Harry Styles obsession is getting a little out of control.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

Water, water, water! You’ve got to have something healthy if you’re going to be sitting for hours. The thought of drinking alcohol and writing scares me, even though it works for some people.

Are there any habits you wish you didn’t have?

I wish I didn’t pick at my fingers all the time!  My thumbs are almost always looking rough.

Where do you find your inspiration?

From whatever is in front of me at the time. When I wrote Catching the Fever, my best friends were the inspiration for my characters.  Justin Bieber was constantly playing on my iPod, so “Justin Crew” obviously evolved from that.  Paisley’s chameleons came into play when I was house/chameleon sitting for my cousin. I thought they were cool and decided Paisley needed some!

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

On Gossip Girl when Blair is pregnant with Louis’ baby and Chuck finally apologizes for everything he’s ever done to her. Something about the script and Lana Del Ray playing in the background is beyond perfect.
