An interview with Julie Coons, author of This Does Not Leave This House

This week, I’d like to introduce Julie Coons, author of This Does Not Leave This House, a memoir from her childhood with an abusive mother. She wrote the book hoping to inspire positive change in the world.

What is one thing that no-one would usually know about you?

That I was an abused child

What did the best review you ever had say about you and your work?

That it was the best memoir she has ever read.

What did the worst review you ever had say about you and your work?

I got a one-star review on Goodreads, however no comment was written. That drove me crazy. If you are going to rip my book, at least tell me why so I can work on improving whatever it is you didn’t like. When you don’t comment, how would I ever know?

How did you choose a title for your book?

It is a phrase spoken frequently from my father.

Have you ever wished that you could be or do anything else instead of writing, and if so what?

I never thought I would ever be a writer. Honestly, it wasn’t even my idea to write my book. I was meeting with a medium and she gave me a message from the spirit world recommending I write a book about my life. At first I said no way, I do not want to relive the events in my life. Then the message was that my book would really help others, and that was exactly what I needed to hear to inspire me to get going.

Have you ever written naked?

Lord no!

What is the single biggest challenge you faced when writing your book?

Finding a good editor.

Do you have any hints or tips for aspiring writers?

Yes, have your book professionally edited and formatted.

How do you remain sane while working?

Writing my book was surprisingly healing for me. It almost felt like I was purging my soul.

What is the best excuse you have ever come up with for missing a deadline?

I’m self published so I didn’t have a deadline.

What has been the best experience you have ever had in your life?

The day my daughter was born.

Are you jealous of other writers?

Sometimes, I won’t lie. When I go to the grocery store and see other books for sale on the shelves, I wish mine were right next to them. I regret not finding a publisher for that reason. However, what publisher would take a chance on me, a complete unknown?

What is your favourite TV moment of all time?

Hands down, Roseanne Barr’s stand up comedy show. I was in a horrible marriage, sitting alone in the middle of the dump we lived in late one night and she was joking about her life. It was a joke ripping her husband and I sat there all alone and laughed so hard out loud I felt like a crazy person. She really gave me life that night.

Tea, Coffee, Water, Juice, Wine or Beer … which do you prefer when writing?

I love to write at Starbucks with a cup of coffee.
