Friday Fictioneer’s – Painting Creation
This post is for the weekly challenge set by Madison Woods called Friday Fictioneers. The idea is that you submit a 100 word flash fiction story associated with the picture challenge added the previous Wednesday. You can find out more, and see the picture, on Madison’s Blog here: http://madisonwoods.wordpress.com/flash-fiction/moon-and-sky/

Her students had departed; fearing the coming rain would damage hours of canvas work. Only she had stayed to capture the fractured light as it changed.
The rain pelted down, changing the nature of each brush stroke as she applied oil on canvas; colours and shapes swirling madly, developing then dissolving to become something else entirely.
‘Perhaps this is how the world was created’ she thought.’ Perhaps we’re all part of an ever-changing canvas on which God places his brush’
His voice was rich ‘if I didn’t know better I’d say that the eye of God was watching you’.

Thanks Cherryl – it’s the sort of thing that really appeals to me, watching what happens when some other ‘force’, in this case rain, takes over 🙂
Really liked what you did here, Linda. Although most artists probably would run for cover to protect their painting, I can also see how someone might stay, fascinated by what the rain is doing to the colors. The voice at the end is really intriguing. I think you might have the beginning of a much longer piece.
Thanks so much Sonia 🙂
pretty and very interesting flash!
Why thank you 🙂
I’m not an artist either and i suspect that she got caught out by staying too long – then once the water and oil mixed she became fascinated by the change – well, it’s a theory 🙂
Thank you so much for the lovely sentiment, I love that word ‘lyrical’ 🙂
Why thank you – this voice is perhaps something I shall work on exploring further 🙂
Both beautiful and fascinating – I am intrigued as to whose voice she hears too. Nicely done.
I’m over here: http://elmowrites.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/friday-fiction-halloween/
Lyrical and spare, very well done. Thanks for reading mine!
I wonder why she would stay and continue knowing the inclement weather would destroy it. To me it’s not plausible that a serous painter/artist would allow it. Most I know, would do anything to protect their work. But then again, if you thought like me, you wouldn’t have a story…so bravo. And I’m assuming the last line was/is the “Voice of God.” Thanks for commenting on mine.
Very inspirational take on the photo prompt!
My story is here: http://bridgesareforburning.wordpress.com/
You’re very welcome and thanks for your lovely comment too.
Why thank you. I shall try my best to do more.
I really liked this line ” Perhaps we’re all part of an ever-changing canvas on which God places his brush”. Indeed, I think we are. Nicely done, Linda. 🙂
Thanks for commenting on mine 🙂
Siobhan
Nice Linda. I can’t decide if you meant the reply to be in her head or real. I’ve decided to vote for real. More, please.
Thanks Doug for your lovely comment and perhaps we’ll get a brush stroke from heaven to see ourselves sometime 🙂
And you too 🙂
I think I surprised myself by understanding the artist wanting to finish the painting and then becoming entranced by what was developing before her too – seems kind of odd but normal if you know what I mean 🙂
Thank you very much indeed and yes, that is exactly what happens in creation isn’t 🙂
I must admit it was the eye I saw before I even saw it was the moon and clouds and instantly I thought of the eye of god 🙂
I’m a fan of perspective and applying it in different ways and your way of looking at my piece really intrigued me as I hadn’t seen in that light, so thank you very muchly 🙂
I find myself beginning to wonder about him too Jeannie, especially in light of some of the comments 🙂
I’ve always been interested in how painting is affected by water – whether it’s oils or watercolours 🙂
Why thank you very kindly 🙂
As I’ve read some of the comments I find myself wondering about him too and whether he is God speaking to (or through) her – perhaps I’ll do a complete story one day and see what happens 🙂
Thank you very much indeed for your comment 🙂
I’m finding myself wondering who ‘he’ is … perhaps it’s God 🙂
I’m intrigued. He answered her thoughts. Here’s mine:http://postcardfiction.com/2012/05/11/you/
Amazingly written. I liked the perspective and how it was kind of twisted. I also loved the message. Here’s mine: http://theforgottenwife.com/2012/05/11/friday-fictioneers/
I got the impression that the gent at the end could’ve been God speaking to her. I liked how thoughtful this was.

Oooo, this gave me the shivers!! Great piece. 🙂
OOoo, this gave me shivers. Great piece. 🙂
I love the idea of the nature of the painting changing through the rain. Interesting perspective!

Oh yes, I really like this! All of it!! Her musing about creation, and the man…must know more about this man…friend or foe? Good job!
I liked this a lot and I had the thought that maybe the painter was a god creating a new world out of the swirling colors. The voice at the end confused me though. I wasn’t sure where/who it was coming from and that took me out of the story somewhat.
“developing then dissolving to become something else entirely.” That’s so true of people. How many times does someone become someone else once we get to know them?

Funny how the photo prompted the link with ‘eye’ – I didn’t see that until someone mentioned it. Nice take on this – made me stop to consider how oil paints would be affected by rain water.

I love this idea of creation. Out of chaos the world was created and made orderly. Beautiful! Mine is here: http://readinpleasure.wordpress.com/2012/05/11/fridayfictioneers-tanoas-baby/
As an artist, I appreciated your perspective, Linda. I could see the artist desperately trying to capture the image before it started to rain.

Nice work! I like the line “…the eye of God was watching you”
I’d be watching out for the next brush stroke from the heavens. A very nice meditation on creation and divinity.
Aloha,
Doug

Thank you 🙂
lovely. nice turn of perspective.
very nice. i enjoyed.
Why thank you very kindly and I meant to say when I commented that I love your username too 🙂
I have no idea who he is yet .. but I think he’s OK 🙂
Who is the man???This sounds like something that could go horribly wrong, depending on who he is. I like this a lot. Here’s mine shortie: http://remakingme-atiyatownes.blogspot.com/2012/05/friday-flash-fiction-birthing.html
that is a nice one you have there, too!
the feeling of painting….the canvas, which made the girl think of God when He made the Earth….great!
The eye of God, I love it! Talk about unique. I also like how you led into it, the painting, the storm. Nice.
