Academic writing is a skill learned by practice and repetition and is rarely taught at College or University. It has a style all of its own. which is typically formal, written in the third person (if a point of view is required at all), may need appendices, will use different types of data, include quotations, and you will need to cite your primary and secondary sources in your references and bibliography.
I know from my experience as a student and researcher that this writing style does not come naturally to most people and is only learnt ‘on the job’. Knowing how to paraphrase rather than quote, when and what to reference, how much to include in the body of a paper or essay rather than as an appendix, the complexities of interpreting other people’s words, how to avoid assumptions and grandiose statements, and the difference between methodology and discussion, is an art. Additionally, different referencing styles can make it even harder, especially if you change institutions.
My job is to help you develop your personal academic writing style to carry you through essays, research papers, dissertations and peer-reviewed publications. We’ll work together online on writing activities that also include developing citations and references, literature review, academic reading and research skills.
If you are working on a specific project I can also help you gather your ideas, think about your data and sources, plan the structure, and learn how to revise and edit what you’ve written. What I won’t do though is write the paper or essay for you.
